If so, then you’ve come to the right place.

Parrot rescue centers will take parrots regardless of breed if they have been neglected or are unwanted by their owners.

Many parrots end up unwanted by their owners and are brought to rescues for a number of reasons.

Such as their owner not being able to afford to keep them anymore, or the owner dying or moving into a smaller residence and simply not having the room for a parrot.

In this post, I have tried to list as many active parrot rescues in Alabama as I can:

Some things to consider before adopting a parrot

Before you adopt a parrot into your home, there are many considerations to take into account. I have come up with a few things to factor in.

Parrots are wild animals

Parrots are not domestic animals. They are wild animals. This means they can be wild when they want to be and may scratch or bite.

Parrots are loud

Parrots are not quiet animals. They are loud! Sometimes they may be quiet, but most parrots are loud at some point or another. They won’t necessarily talk but will normally squawk and scream!

There are many different types of parrots

There are over 350 different types of parrot and each type has its own personality so you need to make sure you choose the right one for you.

The Cost

You have to factor in the cost of adopting the bird, the cost of feed, cage, toys, and the ongoing costs. Don’t adopt a parrot if you can’t afford it or have a history of losing your job.

Parrots are a lifetime commitment

Parrots live a long time. If you are looking to adopt a parrot, make sure you’re in it for the long haul.

Intelligence

Parrots are highly intelligent and some types of parrot have the same intelligence as a small child. Parrots need some time to play and they require a lot of attention. They also require some entertainment to stop them getting bored such as toys, other parrots or TV.

The amount of care needed

Parrots need a lot of care, so bear this in mind before making a decision to adopt a parrot. If you don’t have the time to be with a parrot, then maybe a parrot isn’t the right pet for you.

Do your homework

It should be your own responsibility to do your homework.

Make sure you are prepared.

Check out this parrot website and take a look at some other parrot websites.

Get some parrot magazines and books and read through those.

If you are on social media,  get involved in parrot Facebook groups such as this one and another idea would be to join Parrot communities on forums and message boards.

Maybe visit a local aviary or zoo and try and get a feel of a parrot in real life.

You want to try and soak up as much information as possible before adopting a parrot.

If you have preconceived ideas and expectations of what a parrot will bring to your and/or your family, then you probably shouldn’t adopt as you’ll only be setting yourself up for disappointment.

If you are prepared to love a parrot as it is with no judgment then you will have a companion for life.
